On December 19, 2020 West Routt Fire Protection District (WRFPD) was dispatched by Routt County Communications Center (RCCC) to respond for a garage on fire at 40700 Peak View Court (Canyon Valley Ranch). Enroute to the scene WRFPD requested mutual aid response from Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue (SSFR) for a Water Tender (2000 gallon water truck with pump) as the incident was on the border of WRFPD and SSFR and in an area without hydrants. Craig Fire and Rescue was put on standby notice for the structure fire also. Recent snows, steep roads and the distance from a nearby fire station made for a challenging response to the fire. Upon arrival WRFPD command staff found the back of a garage on fire and quickly initiated attack with preconnected hose lines from Engine 7-1. Using water from the Fire Engine and Water Tenders, crews were quickly able to suppress fire and keep it from spreading to any other structures. There was fire and smoke damage to the structure and the vehicles housed inside the structure. At 1522 WRFPD command staff declared the fire out. Once the fire was out crews quickly reloaded all the hose in their apparatus and began to leave the scene.

At 1541 RCCC received notification from WRFPD that Engine 7-1 had gone off the edge of Valley Drive rolling numerous times. WRFPD requested response of multiple area ambulances and a Fire Engine from Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue for multiple injured parties. WRFPD responded to the scene with 2 ambulances and SSFR responded with one ambulance and one engine. Oak Creek Fire Protection District was called to cover the Steamboat area since all 8 daily personnel were involved in the West Routt incident and Craig Memorial Hospital was called to cover Hayden as all WRFPD personnel were involved in the rescue or injured. Routt County Search and Rescue was paged for rope rescue as the Engine 7-1 was approximately 150-200 feet down a steep embankment but ultimately cancelled. 4 personnel were transported to area hospitals with 2 crew members being transported to UC Health at YVMC and 2 crew members being transported to Memorial Regional Hospital. All personnel have minor injuries and we are grateful that none were more seriously hurt during the rollover or subsequent rescue.

The cause of the fire at 40700 Peak View Court is under investigation. The cause of the rollover was due to Engine 7-1 breaking loose on the steep and icy road; speed was not considered a factor. West Routt Fire Protection District would like to thank the following agencies for their assistance with the structure fire and subsequent rescue; Routt County Sheriff’s Office, Routt County Communications, Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue, Oak Creek Fire Protection District, Memorial Regional Hospital, Craig Fire and Rescue, Routt County Road and Bridge, Routt County Search and Rescue.
